The three things that need nothing

  1. Power it off. Costs nothing, prevents the most damage. Do not check whether it still works first.
  2. Hold it grille-down and let it drain. Gravity is doing real work here. Do not shake it hard — that drives water in through seams.
  3. Do not charge it. Especially relevant away from home, where a low battery makes charging tempting. This is the rule that matters most.

What you probably have on you

A cotton shirt or sleeve works for blotting. Press rather than rub. A SIM tool, paperclip or earring post opens the SIM tray, which gives moisture an escape route and lets you check the liquid indicator inside the slot.

Running a cycle without preparation

Case off, Bluetooth off in settings, volume around 70–80 percent, grille facing straight down at about 45 degrees. Hold it away from your body — clothing absorbs expelled water and can wick it straight back.

If it was seawater

Counterintuitive but correct: rinse briefly with clean fresh water if any is available, then dry. Diluting and removing salt prevents chloride deposits that would otherwise keep corroding long after the phone seems fine. Bottled water is fine for this.

What to avoid in a hurry

Hand dryers in public toilets — the heat warps thin components and pushes vapour deeper into the chassis. Car heaters aimed at the phone, for the same reason. And rice, if someone offers it.

When you get home

Upright, in moving air, for 24 to 48 hours before charging. Wireless charging is safe in the meantime if your device supports it.

FAQ

Common questions

Can this damage my speaker?

No. The frequencies used sit inside the range your speaker already reproduces whenever you play music, and the tool runs at moderate volume rather than maximum. The one genuine caution is earbuds: never run ejection tones into in-ear devices while you are wearing them.

How long should I run it?

Thirty to sixty seconds per cycle, repeated two or three times with short pauses. Running it continuously for many minutes adds nothing once the accessible liquid is out, and only heats the voice coil.

Should I set volume to maximum?

No. Around 70 to 80 percent is the practical sweet spot. Maximum volume on a restricted diaphragm produces distortion rather than more displacement, and adds avoidable stress to the driver.

Does the rice trick work?

No. Rice is a poor desiccant — open moving air dries a device faster — and its starch dust migrates into the charging port, microphone holes and speaker grille, which can create a second problem on top of the first.

It is still muffled after several tries. Now what?

Stop. If three cycles produce no improvement at all, the cause is not blockage. Check the symptoms on our guide to when a sound tool will not help, and have the device inspected rather than continuing to run cycles.

What this cannot fix

Our tool is great for water and dust, but it cannot fix physically blown speakers or electrical damage.
