Judging whether cleaning worked is genuinely difficult, because memory of how something sounded is unreliable in both directions. A fixed reference solves it.

Why your memory is not a reliable instrument

After spending ten minutes cleaning, you want it to have worked — and expectation shapes perception considerably. The opposite also happens: gradual improvement across several cycles is easy to miss because each step is small. Neither error is avoidable by concentrating harder.

Record a reference before you start

Record a fifteen-second voice memo — your own voice, reading anything — before the first cycle. Play it back through the affected speaker at a fixed volume after each stage. Because the file never changes, any difference you hear is real. This single habit makes the whole process measurable.

Use speech, not music

A bass-heavy track masks exactly the mid and high frequency dullness that indicates remaining blockage, and a familiar song biases what you think you hear. Consonants are the giveaway: if s, t and f sounds are soft or smeared, something is still in the mesh.

The high-tone test

A 10 kHz tone is useless for cleaning but excellent for measuring, because high frequencies are attenuated most by mesh obstruction. Play one before and after. A blocked speaker renders it thin and distant; a clear one renders it sharp and present. The difference is more obvious than with any music.

Compare against the other speaker

If your device has two, the unaffected one is a built-in reference. Play the same file through each and listen for the difference in brightness and volume. If they now match, you are done. If one is still duller, there is more to remove.

If two consecutive cycles produce no further change, you have reached what home methods reach. The remainder is usually bonded material, and pursuing it with sharp tools or compressed air makes things permanently worse rather than better.

FAQ

Common questions

Can this damage my speaker?

No. The frequencies used sit inside the range your speaker already reproduces whenever you play music, and the tool runs at moderate volume rather than maximum. The one genuine caution is earbuds: never run ejection tones into in-ear devices while you are wearing them.

How long should I run it?

Thirty to sixty seconds per cycle, repeated two or three times with short pauses. Running it continuously for many minutes adds nothing once the accessible liquid is out, and only heats the voice coil.

Should I set volume to maximum?

No. Around 70 to 80 percent is the practical sweet spot. Maximum volume on a restricted diaphragm produces distortion rather than more displacement, and adds avoidable stress to the driver.

Does the rice trick work?

No. Rice is a poor desiccant — open moving air dries a device faster — and its starch dust migrates into the charging port, microphone holes and speaker grille, which can create a second problem on top of the first.

It is still muffled after several tries. Now what?

Stop. If three cycles produce no improvement at all, the cause is not blockage. Check the symptoms on our guide to when a sound tool will not help, and have the device inspected rather than continuing to run cycles.

What this cannot fix
